Canada discards 5,152 kt of plastic a year and reprocesses only about 6.5%1 of it; batteries and devices are binned with most of their service life still inside. Riposte Laboratories was founded to address that directly: recovering material from the waste stream and returning it as durable, well-engineered products.

We operate at a local scale: recovering materials that would otherwise be discarded, engineering them into functional products, and returning them to the communities they came from.

Plastic Works

Plastic is collected from local sources, then shredded, sorted, and remanufactured through injection molding.

Post-industrial PS and ABS (the resins in every model kit) are clean, single-resin, and homogeneous2, yet no BC program takes plastics from business and no local buyer pays for them3. We keep that loop local: community-scale collection, in-house processing, and molded products returned to the area they came from.

Short supply loops. Long-lived products. No ocean freight.

Project HEX turns reclaimed lithium cells into a modular hexagonal power tile: an energy panel that clips into arrays and clads the surface of a building.

Each unit carries six cylindrical cells measuring 45 × 13 mm, one seated along every edge of the hexagon and wired in series. Six reclaimed 2.41 Wh cells deliver 14.46 Wh per tile at a 6S output.

The top face is a solar panel, so every tile is a small generator that tops up its own cells. Magnetic edges let units snap together, and those same magnets accept an optional screen module to interface with the array.

Because hexagons tessellate, arrays scale without gaps and wrap compound curves; the geometry is built to sheath a geodesic-based home in self-charging power.

Project SPOOL

Project SPOOL reclaims clear PET drink bottles into 1.75 mm 3D-printer filament, then closes the loop inside a local makerspace: the Okanagan Regional Library, Kelowna branch.

PET water bottles are the cleanest, best-sorted plastic in the waste stream, and close kin to the PETG desktop printers already run. We rinse each bottle, cut it into a continuous ribbon, and draw that ribbon through a heated die to form 1.75 mm filament, using the technique open-sourced by the Polyformer project.4 Bottle in, filament out; no pellets, no ocean freight.

The showcase partner is the Okanagan Regional Library's Kelowna branch, whose public makerspace runs 3D printers and generates two waste streams of its own5: leftover filament spools and failed prints. We take both; empty spools are refilled with reclaimed filament and returned, and print waste is reground back into the stream.

One building, one closed loop. Bottles from the branch become filament for the branch's printers, wound on the branch's own returned spools.

Showcase: ORL Kelowna makerspaceThe Okanagan Regional Library's Kelowna branch runs a public makerspace with 3D printers; it seeds the loop with leftover spools and failed prints, and it is the first place SPOOL filament goes back to work. Partner with us to bring the loop to your branch.
